Misappropriation

Most traditional tribal tattoos from any given culture are usually meant to uphold certain meanings. Many of these tattoos serve as a form of communication to those that see it. They have great importance because it is an expression of identity through motifs and symbols. The used patterns can even sometimes tell the story of that person's lineage.

So when another person just copies a tribal pattern for the sake of trend and vanity, doesn't that seem disrespectful to the person that tattoo was made for? Doesn't that make the person who misappropriated nothing but a fraud? He's basically wearing another man's story not his own.

Two videos of individuals using the same patterns and designs used by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

Carrying the Weight.

There's only a couple weeks left in the semester and this project and class is almost coming to a close. I can honestly say that I've learned a lot during the process of this study. From how to go about conducting a proper research study to discovering some aspects of my culture that I might have missed while doing previous research in the past. As I state in the study, Filipino-American Identity is an important thing to our culture. Because of my personal connection to the study it makes it easier to discuss and this process is just another step in making an attempt discovering identity.

One step forward in progress, One step toward the goal.
or in this case, earning my tattoo. haha

ehhh now back to writing this proposal.

Feeling the weight.

I released my survey not to long ago and received a good amount of feedback from it. While reviewing some of the comments that had been left, I noticed how much the survey still needed to be worked on. As I consulted with some panel members and any others willing to help I noticed that there was more than the survey that needed work.

I eventually realized that my thought process on attacking the research study may have been a little off. So I dialogued a little bit more and sought help from friends and associates to get the study and my mind state back on track.

I'll probably be switching a lot of wording around especially with how I've stated the problem and purpose statement. Vocabulary and Definitions play heavily in the issues i'm addressing so it's coming down to learning how to properly word everything and how to keep asking the right questions.

7 weeks left.
all about staying on the ball...

Revision

So it looks like I'll be sticking with my primary subject matter on the cultural tattoos.

I've been contemplating on this topic for more than a couple of years and I feel that I'm passionate it enough to follow through with it.

Start strong Finish Strong is my motto this semester. Time to make it happen.

This is the revision I came up with thanks to some feedback and rethinking.

Who are YOU?

I don't know, identity is a complicated thing. What does it mean to truly mean to exist? Are we
all jus-... haha ok jk. But in all seriousness, I still do ask myself that question once in awhile. I guess I kinda believe that's what living is all about. Yea, that probably sounds corny but hey, give me a break here I'm trying to make you're reading experience a little more than boring here.

So, with that untypical intro out of the way, the name given to be at birth was

Michael John Laygo Yra.

like how I gave it it's own line? haha. I was born and raised in Vallejo, CA and still call that bubble home till this day. Despite the bad name the city has given itself, I will always see it as my stomping grounds. Plus, Vallejo in all actuality isn't as bad as most non-Vallejoans believe.

I have always been a creative person and loved dreaming up new ideas. I've always challenged my imagination with a various number of things. Growing up in the 90's was easy because of the explosion of all this new media and technology. Me and my siblings had plenty of video games to keep us occupied. It was also a big event when my family had purchased their first PC, then it was all down hill form there haha. It's basically why I'm such a nerd/"techie" today.

So I'm just another person with a passion for Design as well as many other creative fields.
I'm always open to new things, and currently trying to change my old ways for the better.

the Beautiful Struggle...

(corny...)

What Inspires/”WOWs” YOU?
Many things inspire me, I know it's not much of a great answer but life itself inspires me and I wholeheartedly believe that. The amount of inspiration that exists is unimaginable just as long as you open your mind to it all. I love animation, so these days I'm heavily influenced by music and modern hiphop dance. Majority of the time I listening to music. I'm envisioning movement in many shapes and forms. Whether it be how a certain 3d object or how a body part moves along with the music. Possibilities are endless when it comes to imagination and creativity.

I feel that so many people are stuck within their bubbles/comfort zones that they don't get to see what's really out there in the world. Numerous cultures that all have their own unique perspectives on life and art. If there's anything that "WOWs" me it's the overwhelming reality of this.

Who, or What are your influences?
I have much respect for the history and origins of things, but I think I draw a lot influence off the things I've grew up with. I believe everyone has a story worth telling and that lessons are always embedded into each one.

I've always heavily influenced by my environment and especially my peers. We're all bound to know at least a couple of people that do great things, and I'm proud to be able to say that I know many. This ranges anywhere from family, friends, teachers, and (sure, why not) relatively famous people haha.

What is your Vision or HOPE in your life(time): academically; professionally; and/or socially.
My general vision/goal is to never stop observing and to never stop growing. It's about paying attention to what's happening and responding to it accordingly. Hopefully, later down the line I manage to find the balance between security and passion. When I was growing up, I was being taught that security was very important. This is because I had been learning from individuals that didn't necessarily have security themselves when they were growing up. It was about choosing the correct career path that obviously paid the most money. Simultaneously, passion usually entailed a career that was the opposite and didn't pay very much at all. My dream is to find that balance, and I don't intend to give up anytime soon.
